Frequently asked questions
What is a lavalava?
A lavalava (ie lavalava in Samoan) is a rectangular piece of cloth wrapped around the waist and tied or tucked to form a skirt. It is worn by men and women across Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and Micronesia, and is similar to a sarong, sulu or pareo.
How do you tie a lavalava?
Hold the cloth behind you at waist height, wrap one side across the front, wrap the other side over it, then tuck or roll the top edge at the waist to secure it. Women can also tie it at the hip or over the chest as a beach cover-up.
Do men wear lavalavas?
Yes. In Samoa, Tonga and Fiji men wear lavalavas every day, and plain or formal styles are worn to church and work. Women wear brighter printed lavalavas as skirts and beach wraps.
